Aquarium Pula is a destination that will attract children as well as adults. Alongside the aquarium display, that in a uniquely interesting and educational way presents natural and cultural history of Croatia, the aquarium setting is remarkable in its own right. Namely, it is housed is an Austro-Hungarian fort “Verudela”, built in 1886. and registered as protected cultural heritage. The fort has been under a constant process of revitalization since 2002. More than 1500 m2 of aquarium space and 5000m2 of outside area is adapted to suit the needs of the aquarium and its visitors. Most of the rooms have been used to display various exhibits, only the central part – the cannon block – and the moat surrounding the fort, 100 meters long and 10 meters wide, remain unused. The historical fort is nowadays inhabited by hundreds of fish species from the northern and the southern portions of the Adriatic and several tropical marine and fresh water species, as well as fish from Croatian lakes and rivers.
